Let me start by telling you about myself.
Meghan Barwick, 19, Freshman, Lehigh University, Journalism major, Art Studio Minor (maybe), Enjoys playing guitar, drawing, documentaries, thinking.
I’d also like to start by explaining my blog title. I’m terrible at naming things, so my usual strategy is to pick one of the first names that come to my head. (It’s a little easier that way).
The first name I came up with, and rejected, was “Ramblin (Wo)man” from the song Ramblin Man:
I think you’ll see in a little why I wanted to call it that. For now, here’s why I named my bog “World of Gimmicks”.
Jimi Hendrix was once asked if his band does any gimmicks.
He responded, “Gimmicks, here we go again, gimmicks man, I’m tired of people saying we’re…gimmicks, what is this? The world is nothing but a big gimmick, isn’t it? Wars napalm bombs, all that, people getting burned up on TV and it’s nothing but a stunt. Gimmick. Yes we do.”
Along with that is one of his songs, “Hear My Train A Comin (Acoustic)”
So there you have it. I’m inspired by many people and you’ll probably be reading a lot about all of them throughout my posts. But for now I’ll talk about arguably the greatest rock guitarist ever.
I have a poster of him on my wall at school, and he is one of my favorite artists.
He spent his short career making amazing music and working with influential people. He died September 18th in 1970 of a drug overdose.
The world really is made of gimmicks and tricks. People are just trying to do what they think is right, but their means might not always be moral. I’m just trying to sort out how the world works, and why people do what they do.
This is the reason that I am majoring in journalism. I hope that by being able to report on and research various topics, I can simply learn more—and do it as a career.
I’d ideally like to be in the field of documentaries, which as said above, is something I really enjoy. I think the medium is great for spreading ideas, especially in our visually focused society.
I’d like to also take this moment to mention that I love bacon. It might crop up a few times. I only mention this because someone in this very room is clearly eating bacon…To exemplify this love I’ll show you the screen shot from my very first “What do you love” search, run by Google:
Check it out here: What Do You Love?
My blog will have to do with things that make me think and topics they may be controversial. Feel free to comment and tell me what you think on any given topic, but please make sure you support your opinions with factual information- and I’ll do the same!
